How Does a Whole-House Fan Work?
A whole-house fan is a large fan installed in your attic that pulls air through your windows and doors, throughout your entire home and expels it through the roof. When you turn the fan on, you must open all the doors and windows of your house. Although this creates a nice breeze, whole-house fans are able to cool the house only if the air outside is cooler than the air inside.
For that reason, it may not be beneficial to run them in the middle of the day. Theoretically, you could run them overnight and into the early part of the day, then shut the windows and doors and enjoy the cool. This is easier to do when you have a stone or stucco house that traps indoor air better than homes made of wood.
Is a Whole-House Fan Install Worth It?
If you lived in Arizona, a whole-house fan install may not be the best choice. But here in Utah, our electricians believe they are useful tools that can save you electricity.
Salt Lake City residents who want to remain comfortable in their homes all summer long will be hard-pressed to do so without any air conditioning. And while a whole-house fan cannot replace air conditioning here all year long, it can for a significant portion of the early and late parts of summer, when the temperatures are not as high.
Why get both AC and a whole-house fan, you ask? A whole-house fan uses 90% less electricity than an air conditioner, so you will save lots of energy and money by running your whole-house fan whenever possible. Additionally, if you love the outdoors and hate the stale quiet that air conditioners force upon you, you will love to be able to have your windows open longer and hear the birds chirp and feel the breeze blow.
House Fan Installation
If you don’t have air conditioning, house fan installation is much cheaper than getting central air conditioning at your Salt Lake City home. Some of our customers have a single room air conditioner and a whole-house fan, which is an environmentally conscious and cost-effective solution to keeping cool in Utah.
